Why I’m voting for Obama

with 7 comments

These are the top 10 reasons why I’m voting for Obama come November. This is taken directly from MoveOn.org and people need to know that McCain is not who he says he is.

  • John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has “evolved,” yet he’s continued to oppose key civil rights laws.
  • According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain “will make Cheney look like Gandhi.”
  • His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.
  • McCain opposes a woman’s right to choose. He said, “I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned.”
  • The Children’s Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children’s health care bill last year, then defended Bush’s veto of the bill.
  • He’s one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a “second job” and skip their vacations.
  • Many of McCain’s fellow Republican senators say he’s too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He’s erratic. He’s hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.”
  • McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates
  • McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his “spiritual guide,” Rod Parsley, believes America’s founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a “false religion.” McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church “the Antichrist” and a “false cult.”
  • He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.

McCain has so far done nothing but try to smear Obama’s name, is taking cheap shots now at Michelle, and is lying through his teeth to everyone just so he can be elected. I was reading on CNN.com how the McCain camp feels that Michelle Obama is fair game, which is understandable in a way because it’s part of politics and the public life, but it kind of seems to me that since Hillary is no longer in the running and they have this momentum to bash women at every corner, now they’re going to take cheap shots at Michelle simply because they feel she may be an easy target. It’s a low maneuver to try to not only get people to vote for him but to see if they could catch Obama off guard and say, “See! That’s why he shouldn’t be our next president! It’s gotten so bad that Obama had to start a Fight the Smears web site to get the truth out there because there are so many lies circling that this is probably one of the best venues he has to clear his name.

I hope all the Clinton supporters think about all this when they decide who they will vote for come November.

  1. If I read this and the facts ironed out Obama would have my vote too. Good points!

  2. Hmm. Every one of your “top 10” reasons, is a hit on McCain.

If Obama is so wonderful, I would think that you would have reasons to vote for him OTHER than “he isn’t this other guy”.

  3. I do have plenty of reasons, most of which are listed on the top ten.

Obama will be wonderful for this country where as putting McCain into office will be the equivalent of having any Bush term. Please read the rest of my blog to understand why I like Obama so much more than Bush, because to outline it all here would be the equivalent of just going through my blog.

  4. Great post! Remember, these top ten are focus on McCain because they are part of an ad that shows the similarities between Bush and McCain. Yet, you are right that the difference between McCain and Obama show how great Obama is … for being:
    1. Adamantly pro civil rights
    2. Cautious about getting the US embroiled in wars
    3. Against torture, and with the voting record to prove it
    4. Dedicated to women’s rights and the perusal of policies that would actually limit the number of abortions, while preserving women’s rights over their own bodies

  5. Senator Obama is NOT a Dirty Muslim!

“What you won’t hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge,” says Mr. Obama, while denouncing statements of him being a Muslim as a smear. Why is the presidential candidate who claims to be religiously inclusive is treating the word “Muslim” as an insult? Apparently, it is OK for Mr. Obama to be associated with terrorists like William Ayers or racists like Jeremiah Wright, but God forbid somebody would call him a Muslim! No, he won’t stand for that kind of smear! We admit that most terrorists are Muslims, but most Muslims are not terrorists and the statement on Mr. Obama’s website is insulting to hundreds of millions of people.

How could a man who discards his family heritage in favor of political expediency be even considered for presidency of the United States? Where are all the so-called “Islamic civil rights groups” like CAIR, MPAC, ISNA, MAS, etc. who are quick to defend every Islamic terrorist, but are silent when Muslims in general are being denigrated? Would Mr. Obama have the same reaction if someone claimed that he was raised as a Jew? We sincerely doubt that.

Muslims Against Sharia demand immediate removal of “SMEAR: Barack Obama is a Muslim” statement from the official Barack Obama’s website as well as an apology for giving the word “Muslim” a negative connotation.

  6. Despite perceptions that Sen. John McCain has spent more time on the attack, Sen. Barack Obama aired more negative advertising last week than did the Arizona Republican, says a study released yesterday.

Seventy-seven percent of the Illinois Democrat’s commercials were negative during the week after the Republican National Convention, compared with 56 percent of the spots run by McCain.

“If we’re going to ask questions about, you know, who has been promulgating negative ads that are completely unrelated to the issues at hand, I think I win that contest pretty handily,” Obama said.

  7. I have to wonder thought Glenn what was left out of that YouTube commentary by Obama. Interestingly enough, they cut him off just as he was taking another breath ton continue on with his explanation, which is something that has continually been done to Obama since he won the Democratic primaries.

McCain has had a history for twisting truths or spreading flat out lies about Obama, so the truth of the matter is that anything that comes out of McCains camp I take with a grain of salt.
